Silver Coast…………..the New Algarve?

Tourist Information for Silver Coast and Central Portugal

Silver Coast

São Martinho do Porto

Is the nearest town at 4kms from Villa Vida Nova Villa Rental. It boasts a very safe sandy beach where the water is much warmer than the Atlantic ocean as the bay is shell shaped, almost enclosed. There are board walks along the beach and a quay with plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy. All manner of watercraft can be rented here during the summer months. It is a wonderful place to sit relax and people watch. A tourist information office is here.

Foz do Arelho

The beach at Foz do Arelho is a natural wonder. To one side of the large sandy strip is the Atlantic Ocean, to the other side are the tranquil waters of the Óbidos Lagoon. The warm salty waters of the lagoon are ideal for kids and a variety of water sports, they are even said to have therapeutic properties. Kite surfing video

This is a popular surf spot and the waves can get pretty good here, the flat calm waters of the lagoon are ideal for kite surfing, kayaks and bathing. There are many beach bars and restaurants to choose from.

Obidos

The delightful town of Óbidos, with white houses adorned with bougainvillea and honeysuckle was captured from the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148 is one of the most perfect examples of Portugal’s medieval fortress. Inside the walls, which at sunset take on a golden colouring, one can sense a cheerful medieval ambience of winding streets, old whitewashed houses bordered with blue or yellow, Manueline embrasures and windows, reminding us that King D. Manuel I (sixteenth century) carried out major works here, and masses of colourful flowers and plants. Spend the day here, there is plenty to see and do, taste the local cuisine including the liquor Ginja fermented from locally grown cherries. 15 best things to do in Obidos

Caldas da Rainha

This famous spa town, a short 15 minute drive south of the villa, owes its name to the thermal spring that was much appreciated by Queen Dona Leonor. It has a daily food market and weekly Gypsy market, (Mondays). It has all the big box stores and several supermarkets. The town centre has a main street of shops with several sides streets to explore, plenty of pastry shops and cafe’s to tempt you. Several interesting museums and historic sites are well worth a visit. 15 best things to do in Caldas da Rainha Try your driving skills at the Indoor Karting, loads of fun!

Alcobaça

About a half hours drive from the villa you will find this delight historic town. Plenty of free parking with just a few minutes walk to the historic centre where you will find the spellbinding Monastery of Alcobaça. The monument is the final resting place for the 14th-century King Pedro I and his star-crossed lover, Inês de Castro, whose lives were haunted by tragedy. The town has plenty to see and some great eateries, a great place to spend a half day or longer. 15 best things to do in Alcobaca

Nazaré

Only 10 minutes drive North of the villa along a cliff top lane with stunning views of the coast and inland. A typical beach holiday destination with dozens of restaurants. Do take the funicular railway to Sitio on top of the cliffs for spectacular views and yes, more restaurants. Nazare is world famous for it’s enormous freak waves where surfers take up the challenge, this is not for the faint hearted, one can watch the spectacle from Sitio, winter is the best time as the waves are generated in mid Atlantic storms. Live web cam.

Tomar

The development of Tomar is closely linked to the Order of the Templars, which received these lands in 1159 as a reward for the assistance they gave Dom Afonso Henriques (the First King of Portugal) in the Christian reconquest of the territory.   It was Dom Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Order in Portugal, who founded the castle and the remarkable Convent of Christ inside. Enlarged and altered over the centuries, this retains the influences of various architectural styles; it is the centrepiece of the city and classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The Convento do Cristo and Castelo Knights templar can be seen at the same time, (same entrance) and is must see. As always there so much more to see in Tomar, enough to spend a day or more. 15 best things to do in Tomar.

Peniche

Peniche the most western city of continental Europe and has been a port since the Early Modern Age, when a fort was constructed to defend it. This monument has an absorbing history, first as a maritime defence and then a prison during the Estado Novo regime in the 20th century. And since Peniche is still a fishing port, the fish and seafood could not be fresher. And on top of everything, you also have to make time for a boat trip to the Berlingas Islands, a natural reserve off the coast. 15 best things to do in Peniche.

Rio Maior

Rio Maior is a town known for a strange natural phenomenon, salt flats and much further from the ocean than you’d ever expect to find them, and exploited by locals since the 12th century. Don’t miss the salt pans!

The natural park should figure in your plans, whether you’re traversing its arid and vast valleys on foot, bike or horseback, or venturing below the surface into epic show-caves. There’s also a good helping of local sights to check out, from a prehistoric dolmen integrated into a church, to a Roman villa that has mosaics in almost pristine condition. 15 Best things to do in Rio Maior.

Bombarral Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal

Visit one of our local wine and brandy producers, Mon- Fri twice daily tours, learn, taste and shop. What an absolutely wonderful spot! 10/10 recommend. This is a family owned/operated business – wonderful people. We enjoyed our tasting and tour. Great value and delicious wine. Make the stop!

Grutas de Mira de Aire, Caves of Mira de Aire

The Portuguese Central region between Rio Maior, Alcobaça, Porto de Mós, Batalha, Leiria, Ourém, Torres Novas and Alcanena is occupied by Limestone Mountains, which form the Estremadura Limestone Massif. Of these the mains mountains are the Aire and Candeeiros. This area is littered with caves to explore, many can be accessed freely by experienced cavers but there are several open to the public with guided tours the best being Grutas de Mira de Aire. With parking, bar and restaurant and waterslide park it is an ideal day out for the family.

Silver Coast Walks

If you like walking or hiking then you have come to the right place. There are recognised walks that start right at the villa or you can take a short car journey to dozens of others. You can also join a group, they organise short and long walks weekly, a great opportunity to meet people also.

Aveiro

Know as the Venice of Portugal. Situated on a massive lagoon Aveiro is intersected by canals, genuine streets of water, along which can be seen gliding the brightly coloured boats known as barcos moliceiros. Originally founded in the time of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Aveiro is now one of the most interesting cities on the Portuguese coast. 15 best things to do in Aveiro.

Coimbra

On the high banks of the Mondego River, Coimbra is a city with the oldest university in the country. The prestige of this school will hit you when you step onto the Paço das Escolas courtyard. In this rich ensemble of buildings is one of the finest libraries you’ll ever set foot in. The university is found precisely where Portugal’s first kings had taken up residence centuries before, and the city’s monasteries have tombs for these rulers. For culture, you’ll learn about the tragic love affair between the medieval Prince Pedro I and the noblewoman Inês, while Coimbra has its own genre of fado music that also originated at the university. 15 best things to do in Coimbra.

Lisbon and nearby

An hours drive from the villa park up and use public transport from there, though traffic can be heavy and parking not cheap. Better still park you car in one of the free car parks in Caldas da Rainha and take a coach from the bus station to Lisbon, Rede Express, it takes and hour and ten minutes and there over 20 trips each way every day, tickets are very reasonable. The coach will drop you at one of two stations where you can embark on public transport and see the sights or a show. 25 best things to do in Lisbon

Quake

Quake is home to the story of the most extraordinary event: on the morning of the 1st of November 1755, an extremely violent earthquake destroyed Lisbon, followed by a tsunami and ranging fires that lasted a week. By entering in this experience you will feel and see the impact the earthquake had on the city and its people. Quake – Lisbon Earthquake Centre is located near to Avenida da Índia, in the historic area of Belém. The best way to get to Quake is by public transport – bus, train or tram, which connect the area to many points in the city of Lisbon and the other side of the river.

Just an hours drive from the villa. Sintra, the Moon Hill, is a place full of magic and mystery, where nature and man have combined in such a perfect symbiosis that UNESCO has granted it Word Heritage Site status. You can make your own way to visit as many palaces as you like or join a tour 15 best Sintra tours.

Today, together, both sides are proud of having turned the building, its immediate surroundings and the whole Cais do Sodré neighbourhood into a huge attraction for visitors, day and night. Where: Av. 24 de Julho 49, 1200-479 Lisboa

Cascais

When well-heeled Lisboans need a change of airs in summer they go west to Cascais. At this beach getaway you can bathe in transparent waters at peaceful coves.

Portugal’s royal family holidayed at Cascais at the turn of the 20th century, and that glamour has never faded: The president spends his summer in a palace beside the marina, while neighbouring Estoril has an enormous casino once frequented by the jet set. There are elegant parks, noble mansions replete with precious furnishings and a superb art museum for Paula Rego. 15 best things to do in Cascais

Mystery and Romance: A Guide to Crafting the Ultimate Surprise Vacation

Image: Freepik

Planning a surprise trip for your partner is an exquisite gesture that can create lasting memories. It’s an opportunity to whisk them away on an adventure filled with unexpected delights and shared experiences. However, crafting such a journey requires meticulous planning and thoughtful consideration. Here’s how to plan a surprise trip that will leave your partner utterly wowed.

Including Surprises Throughout the Trip

Infuse each day with small surprises or gifts that resonate with the day’s activities or the destination’s culture. These thoughtful gestures will add an extra layer of excitement and romance to your adventure. Consider leaving little notes in unexpected places, arranging for a surprise dinner at a local hotspot, or booking an impromptu activity that aligns with your partner’s interests. These surprises will keep the excitement alive and create memorable moments throughout the trip.

Staying Healthy and Fit Together

Prioritize staying healthy and fit as a couple while traveling. Look for accommodations with fitness facilities, embrace walking or biking to destinations, and always keep hydrated with water on hand. It’s a way to nurture your relationship while nurturing your body. Consider incorporating fun physical activities into your itinerary, such as hiking to scenic viewpoints or trying out a couples’ yoga class. Not only will this keep you both feeling energized and refreshed, but it will also deepen your bond through shared experiences.

Scheduling Downtime and Having Backup Plans

Avoid overloading your itinerary with activities. Schedule downtime to relax and savor each other’s company. Additionally, have backup plans for activities in case of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, ensuring that your trip remains stress-free and enjoyable. Use this downtime to enjoy leisurely meals together, explore charming cafes, or simply unwind in the comfort of your accommodations. Having flexibility in your plans allows you to adapt to any unexpected changes and ensures that you can make the most of your time together.

Exploring Beyond the Basics

Delve beyond traditional travel guides and explore blogs, forums, and social media for unique and lesser-known spots in your chosen destination. Uncover hidden gems that will surprise and delight your partner, making your trip truly unforgettable. Whether it’s a secluded beach, a cozy neighborhood bookstore, or a quirky local attraction, these off-the-beaten-path discoveries will add depth and richness to your travel experience. Embrace spontaneity and allow yourselves to wander off the tourist trail to discover the true essence of the destination.

Incorporating Your Partner’s Desires

Take note of any specific experiences or places your partner has expressed interest in and incorporate them into your itinerary. Tailoring the trip to their desires shows thoughtfulness and consideration, enhancing the overall experience. Whether it’s visiting a famous landmark they’ve always wanted to see, trying a cuisine they’ve been eager to taste, or participating in an activity they’ve been dreaming of, these personalized touches will make your partner feel cherished and valued. By prioritizing their preferences, you’ll create a trip that resonates deeply with them.

Ensuring Smooth International Travel

Before embarking on an international trip, ensure your partner’s passport is current to prevent unexpected setbacks. Familiarize yourselves with visa requirements, currency exchange rates, and local customs for a smoother transition. Investing in travel insurance can offer peace of mind against potential flight cancellations or medical emergencies, ensuring a confident and stress-free journey.

Accommodating Dietary Needs

Consider your partner’s dietary preferences or restrictions when choosing dining options or accommodations to enhance their comfort and enjoyment during the trip. Research restaurants in advance to find those with diverse menu choices or the ability to accommodate specific dietary needs. Alternatively, opt for accommodations with kitchen facilities to prepare meals together using local ingredients, ensuring a delightful culinary experience without limitations for your partner.

Crafting a surprise trip for your partner is a labor of love that requires attention to detail and thoughtful planning. By incorporating small surprises, prioritizing health and fitness, and embracing spontaneity, you can create a journey that will leave your partner wowed and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. The key is to tailor the experience to your partner’s preferences and create moments that they’ll treasure forever.

Portugal Highest Economic Growth in Europe in 2023

In 2023, Portugal stood out among the 12 best-performing economies in the European Union with the highest economic growth. This means that, compared to its peers, Portugal’s economy did the best that year.

However, it’s important to note that while 2023 showed significant growth, it wasn’t the highest growth ever. In 2022, for instance, the growth rate was almost three times higher than in the last quarter of 2023. But considering the current economic situation, Portugal still outperformed other countries.

Another notable achievement is that Portugal managed to reduce its domestic public debt to less than 100% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the previous year.

The European Commissioner for the economy, Paolo Gentiloni, praised Portugal for this accomplishment in a tweet, calling it an “impressive achievement.”

Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa, also highlighted these positive developments, emphasizing the country’s highest growth rate in the EU, record-high employment, and reduced debt.

Recent data published by the Bank of Portugal reveals that Portugal’s public debt ratio now stands at 98.7%, the lowest since 2009. This reduction in debt has been significant, falling below both government forecasts and reaching levels projected for 2024 earlier than expected.

The Governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, attributes this reduction to the collective efforts of families, businesses, and the government.

The efforts to reduce debt are further highlighted by the significant tax revenues collected by the government, which exceeded spending by €4.3 billion despite increased expenditure.

While Portugal’s economic growth in the last quarter of 2023 was 2.2%, it was lower than the growth experienced in 2022. Nevertheless, Portugal outperformed many other countries in the EU, with Spain being the closest competitor but still trailing by two percentage points.

What’s New in 2022?

We have invested in a 2nd rental property on the popular Silver Coast (Costa da Prata) just North of Lisbon, it is a new 3 bedroom 3 bathroom villa with pool and is now ready for rentals all year around. Located in a quiet rural location just a few minutes drive from Sao Martinho do Porto and within walking distance to the cliff tops and beaches.

Less than an hours drive from Lisbon and the airport and with public transport to the centre of Lisbon so you don’t need to take the car with the hassles of traffic and parking.
It will be an ideal location to take day trips to explore, Lisbon, the palaces of Sintra, the medieval castle of Obidos, the Obidos lagoon and Foz do Arelho, the gigantic waves of Nazare, historic Alcobaca, Aveiro the Venice of Portugal, Porto, Coimbra, Tomar, these are just a few places to visit, there are many more.

The new villa is just 2 years old and 3 bedrooms 2 upstairs both en-suite, both have patio door access to a wrap around sun terrace, on the ground floor is a 3rd bedroom and a family bathroom. Open plan lounge, diner and kitchen with patio doors on two sides to the garden bbq and pool area. All windows and doors have electric shutters and all rooms have airco/heat.

It is located in a tiny hamlet called Venda Nova about 5 minutes drive from Sao Martinho do Porto which is delightful town on an amazing semi-circular bay. There are a couple of restaurants within a 2km walk and 30 plus restaurants within 5 minutes drive. The closest beach is Salgado, it is huge and one can walk to it in about 15 minutes or drive in under 5 minutes. There is traditional market and an Intermarche 5 minutes away. The Algarve remains the best place in the world today to retire overseas.

The Algarve, Portugal Takes Top Honors Yet Again!

For the fifth year in a row, The Algarve remains the best place in the world today to retire overseas.

A view of the coast of the Algarve region in Portugal, with blue and green water and bright trimmed houses. From health care to beaches, The Algarve has something for everyone in Portugal.

But what is it that makes the Algarve so special? The weather is a good place to start. There is sunshine throughout the year and the winters are short and mild. You will never have to shovel snow again. The Algarve receives over 3000 hours of sunshine per year. From May until the end of August there are 12 hours of glorious sunshine per day. The expat community is well established and welcoming.

The medical facilities and health care are affordable and high quality with two major hospitals close by. There are undervalued properties, including ocean views available to suit all budgets. English is widely spoken, thanks to the longstanding British presence. The infrastructure is first class, and you can easily get around the Algarve. The well maintained roads allow for easy access to the rest of Portugal and into the rest of Europe. Portugal’s retiree residency program rolls out the welcome mat for foreign pensioners who they are attracting in greater numbers each year. The Golden Visa process has also been made. Algarve is the 2nd Cheapest European Resort for Travelers and Brexit Proof!

The Algarve is the 2nd cheapest European resort for travelers, an analysis of 20 seaside holiday destinations reveals.

2004 hols nigels camera 007

In first place, comes Bulgaria followed closely by Portugal’s Algarve and in 3rd place was Turkey, the UK’s Post Office Travel Money said.

The survey looks at the costs of several typical expenses that the average tourist will encounter, including lunch and evening meals, drinks, etc.

The most expensive destination was Sorrento in Italy, where prices were three times more expensive than the survey leaders…ouch!Typical Food 6

The survey concludes that these whilst any result is affected by the strength of sterling against the euro it is better than it was 12 months ago. The real reduction in costs are due to  competitive pricing in restaurants, bars and shops by as much as a third in some resorts.

The survey reflects what costs to expect in various resorts but not the quality of service, food or products bought there. Cheap is not always least just as expensive is not always best. I can speak personally for the Algarve and as many tourist will agree, quality has and still does rate very highly here whilst still being the 2nd cheapest destination in Europe.Typical food 8

So the Algarve comes out tops for value for money notwithstanding favourable weather for 12 months of the year not just the season and has the most frequent flights in and out compared to its close competitors.

But what about Brexit and the Algarve and Portugal?

Brexit means Brelcome, well at least it does in Portugal!

“Brelcome, Portugal will never leave you” affirms new tourism campaign aimed at the British.

Monchique, Foia and Picota Road Trip

Cobbled streets and artisan shops, a ruined convent and wonderful gardens are well worth a visit. Monchique is famous for it’s cork oak forests, wild boar and black pork cuisine,

Serra da Monchique the “Upper Algarve”

From either the EN125 or the A22 you will find an intersection with the EN266 just north of the coastal city of Portimao. Following this road you will pass through Rasmalho (Stork City), one of the largest colonies of White Storks in Portugal. White Storks in AlgarveYou will be gradually climbing the wooded foothills of the Serra and will come across a famous Spa village, Caldas de Monchique, turn off here and walk this tiny but fascinating village, you may get to see bread being made in the communal ovens, walk the shaded pathways to the thermal streams, or indulge in rituals at the spa itself.

Caldas da Monchique Algarve PortugalContinue upwards to the town of Monchique, cobbled streets and artisan shops, a ruined convent and wonderful gardens are well worth a visit. Monchique is famous for it’s cork oak forests, wild boar and black pork cuisine, if you intend to eat out in the Algarve then Monchique would be a great choice.

Foia, Algarve’s Highest Point

From the town centre continue upwards along the EN266-3 to Foia, the highest point in the Algarve at 902m above sea level. Here you will have spectacular 360 deg views. An unforgettable experience. You can retrace your steps to Monchique or take any of two other roads that descend, one to the east and one to the north, both will bring you back town.

Picota Contour Route

Monchique Algarve Portugal

There is a gorgeous contour drive that you can take from Monchique: Head to the roundabout that you first encountered when you arrived at Monchique, next to the petrol stations, and take the exit marked Alferce EN267. Take a right 20 meters (literally) after entering this road, which goes behind the bar on the corner, (local labour exchange). You are now on the contour road that circumnavigates the smaller mountain of Picota.Superb Views from Foia and Picota in the Algarve Again the coastal views are spectacular, you will also look down on the Oudelouca dam wall. Stay on this road until you hit a T junction, turn left in the direction of Alferce. Take a drive through the village, just a typical sleepy mountain village where sleeping dogs will not raise an eyebrow as you pass by. Follow signs back to Monchique.

Side trip to Silves

Leave Monchique by the way you came on the EN266, if you still have a few hours, at Porto de Lagos roundabout turn left on the EN124 in the direction of Silves. You can have a taste of this historic walled town with Moorish castle, archaeological museum and Roman bridge, though this could be a full half day trip in its own right.

Algarve West Coast Road Trip.

The Algarve West Coast. Some of the best coastal scenery in Europe awaits you here, pristine, deserted beaches and rugged cliffs will captivate you.

Fishing villages, deserted beaches, rugged cliffs and views, views and more views!

Some of the best coastal scenery in Europe awaits you here, pristine, deserted beaches and rugged cliffs will captivate you. Take the A22 or EN125 to Lagos, Lagos is a day trip all on its own so don’t include it on this itinerary there is simply not the time. Continue west along the EN125. At Vale Verde turn left on the EN537 to visit Praia da Luz and Burgau. Don’t turn north at Burgau keep going west along a much smaller coast road to Salema. These are all small fishing villages that are popular but not swamped with tourism. Great fish restaurants in all of them.2004 hols nigels camera 008

Changes in Scenery and landscape

Head north again until you hit the EN125 again and head west in the direction of Villa do Bispo and Sagres. You will notice that the landscape has changed drastically, very few trees and quite windswept, not unlike Cornwall in the UK, for much the same reason. At Sagres visit the Fortaleza de Sagres and the Cabo de Sao Vicente light house. The cliffs here are spectacular albeit dangerous, don’t go too close to the edge! You are also at the most South Western corner of Europe.West coast 1

Retrace your steps to Vila do Bispo and find the north west corner of the village near the market, head out on the M1265 to Praia do Castelejo, this is one of the best unspoiled beaches in the Algarve, if not Portugal. Back to Vila do Bispo and then head north on the EN268. There are about a dozen small tracks that head west off this road to some spectacular and remote beaches, each about 4kms long, you may need a 2nd day to try some of these. Head north and (don’t miss this section), just 2-30 meters before the quaint village of Carrapateira there is a turn to the left that goes south west to Praia do Amado and from here a wonderful cliff top road that runs north, don’t take a right turn to Carrapateira but continue along the cliff road. There are some great cliff top board walks you can go on. Eventually this road will look down on Praia do Bordeira which is a kite surfers paradise and end up back on the EN268.

Historic Aljezur

Head north again. The EN268 will join the EN120 continue north in the direction of Aljezur which is an old village to explore with a castle and some excellent traditional restaurants. Drive through the narrow streets and keep going uphill to the castle (to save your legs). A few kms before Aljezur you will have passed a turning to the coast, if you have time, track-back and take the M1003-1 to Praia da Arrifana, a surfers haven with stunning scenery, fishing harbour and a small fort that was badly damaged by a tsunami in 1755 which stands atop a 200 foot cliff, yes a tsunami, seriously.

DSC_0251At this point you can turn back on the EN120 to Lagos about an hours drive. Or from Aljezur take the EN267 in an easterly direction towards Monchique. This is a delightful route via the village of Marmelete and then along a contour road to the EN266 just south of Monchique, turn right in the direction of Portimao, this route will take about one hour 15 minutes.

Algarve has Perfect Weather for a Convertible

300 days of sunshine each year make holidays in the Algarve  very popular and driving a convertible a real pleasure. No better place to get your top down! Sightseeing couldn’t be better, secluded coves along the coast or panoramic views from Foia.

300 days of sunshine each year make holidays in the Algarve  very popular and driving a convertible a real pleasure. No better place to get your top down! I have to say though when we lived in the Algarve full-time, during July and August, the top only came down for half an hour or so then up it went and airco on. Those months are just too hot to drive without airco! The rest of the year though is perfect and now that we only spend winters here we take every opportunity to zip around the twisties here in Monchique with the wind in my (grey) hair! We also try to get away for a few days here and there, New Year in Cadiz Spain, the weather was glorious with temps in the high teens, no rain and blue sky, a great trip, only spoiled by the rudeness of the local Spanish people. Well there you go symptoms of Brexit perhaps?

We love to tour Portugal there are so many interesting places to visit, stacked with culture, history and excellent food, any excuse and we off to somewhere and above all the people are polite and friendly, Portugal is England’s oldest ally!

Javali (wild boar) not usually this curious!

One of our favourite places to visit is Tomar, it has a Monastery and castle of the Knights Templars well worth seeing, the town is picturesque with great restaurants.

Algarve Road Trips

There are plenty of day road trips from our Villa Rental in the Algarve and also into the Alentejo, the next province north of here. We often explore and redo trips to Sagres the most south-western point of Europe and from there the west coast right up to the Alentejo border.  Easily done in a day with a stopover at one of the many restaurants along the way. Spectacular unspoiled scenery around every corner.

Our Honda is popular with the wildlife too, this Javali, (wild boar) was inquisitive and kindly left his muddy nose print on my pride and joy, bless him!
